The Salem Witch Trials - Frances Hill

An authoritative investigation of the who, what, where, when, and how of the infamous witch trials in the early days of America. It was all conducted with the best legal policies, scientific investigative techniques, and social standards of the day. The things they accuse the witches of doing are absurd. A modern forensic team with full laboratory resources would have overturned the convictions before they even reached a grand jury. Their conclusion: small, closed societies excise people who are different with as much malice as is allowed by the political standards of the era. It's appalling that this took place only a few generations ago; moreover, that a similar elitist sociological system still exists in many rural areas around the world today.

Do yourself a big favor and learn a little bit about stress. Honest, it won't hurt. You're an adult now - why not learn some adult skills such as relaxation, time management, coping skills training, nutrition, imagination, meditation and assertiveness training. Even if you're already good at all of these skills, why not get better?

Human, All Too Human - Nietzsche

Most people think Nietzsche is heavy reading even for a philosophy major. This book is light, comprised of short one paragraph observations of the human condition. Nietzsche is known for his many harsh criticisms of Christianity, but remember that in the late 1800's psychology was part of religion. It's that part he criticizes, not the spiritual aspect. It's clear that Freud got the basics of his psychology from Nietzsche's works, and I consider the latter to be the true father of modern psychology. He's the people's doctor.

Nasty People - Jay Carter

It's an unfortunate fact of life for many different kinds of people that we need special skills, such as "How to Stop Being Hurt by Them Without Becoming One of Them," the book subtitle. It's a fun little book, with clever illustrations and anecdotes. I've used it often with great success. It you got a bad problem of this nature, do yourself a favor, and read this little book.

The Intuitive Edge - Philip Goldberg

A scholarly but easy to read book on the scientific basis and understanding of intuition. The erudite author dispels the myth of intuition as mere luck or happenstance, but rather is an extremely complex mental process by which the mind is able to sift through a huge volume of seemingly irrelevant data and to arrive at a conviction of truth.

The Way of Splendor - Edward Hoffman

Though little can be understood of the Zohar, that very abstract book of the ancient Jewish mystics, enough was understood to provide the underpinnings of modern day psychoanalysis. Freud's diaries, in fact, make frequent reference to these mystical teachings.

I Am Dracula - C. Dean Andersson

The romantic story of a strong leader charmed by a witch, Tzigane. He begins training, learning meditation, self hypnosis, visualization, and focusing exercises as well as elaborate means to fully develop all of his emotions. A great battle with the gods ensues, and all the while he seeks only to be with the beautiful love of his life.
