In the early 1800's there were two Rabbis whose effect upon their community was similar to the Reformation on Christendom. One charismatic Jewish leader taught tolerance and leniency; the other was an ultra orthodox disciplinarian. Every faith eventually suffers such a split, but none is described with such sensitivity and eloquence. The division is very much like the modern dichotomy between Israeli's and Jews in the diaspora.

1001 Yiddish Proverbs - Fred Kogos

I know this one seems out of place, but it's such a wonderful little book I am obliged to justify it somehow. Yiddish is a language spawned from the days when Jews were confined almost without exception to ghettos. They were totally isolated, but still kept their sense of humor! You got to admire that kind of panache in any people.
