This Roman author (circa 100 AD) was the first environmentalist. He had a special affinity with elephants, claiming they had etiquette, their own society - and even their own sort of religion. Pliny was also the first martyr of science - he was commander of the Roman fleet in the Mediterranean when Mt. Vesuvius began erupting (it quickly buried Pompeii). Pliny rushed to investigate, and died from inhalation of the ash laden air.
